Here's What You Need To Know

With such a wide variety of competently designed wireless camera systems on the market, deciding which one is right for your needs can be tricky.  To that end, I've done a lot of research into these products, stress testing them in extreme conditions and trying to find their flaws.  With that in mind, here are the things that I've found are most important when it comes to purchasing your first wireless surveillance system:

Choose A Wireless Security Camera System That You Can Log In To From Anywhere

The market for these camera systems can be broadly divided into those that can be viewed remotely and those that cannot.  While some of the latter systems attempt to make up for it in other ways, I can't in good conscience recommend purchasing a product that lacks this feature.

In practice, I found Logitech's Alert series of systems to be the most responsive when it comes to remote viewing, but Defender also does a great job with this functionality.  Both brands provide an easy to use interface where you can log in and view your camera feeds.

A Surveillance System Is Made Or Broken By Its Control Software

Make no mistake:  All the features in the world mean very little if you can't efficiently access them.  Lorex, Defender, and Logitech are all fantastic contenders when it comes to straightforward yet powerful software interfaces, but they each take a unique approach.

Logitech uses the "Command Center" software, where each camera that you have connected to the system is represented on its own timeline.  You can rewind to significant events, allowing you to bypass much of the headache involved with watching hour of archived surveillance footage.

Lorex takes a different approach with their LW2702 wireless camera system, choosing instead to integrate the software into an included 7 inch LCD screen.  We recently tested this unit, and the experience was solid.  The screen is a little small, but you'll get used to that quickly.  The Lorex systems are a great alternative, especially when you don't already have a home PC to run the Command Center software on.

You Get What You Pay For

I don't recommend skimping when it comes to home security.  Although the systems from better known companies like Defender and Logitech are a tad more expensive, this is more than made up for by increased build quality, better phone support, and more frequent product updates.  Do yourself a favor and stick with the brand names, trusting your surveillance needs to companies that have made a name for themselves in the industry over a long time.

My Picks

The following is a list of the best wireless security camera systems based on user reviews, my own tests, and many other factors:

I love these systems. They are an ideal way to protect your property and discourage criminals. But more importantly they're such good fun. Logging in from anywhere is the best feature ever. I'm often on the road, and it's reassuring to know that everything's still here.

That's a lot cheaper than I expected. A decent security system used to cost thousands of $. Now it's just a few hundred! Gotta love technology :)

Nice Hub. I agree, these wireless security camera systems are a lot less expensive than I thought and I didn't know they could contact you if they detected motion. How cool!

It's amazing the difference a few years can make in available technology and the power of free market. The prices have really come down, making them affordable for most people.

Thanks for the comments everyone! It is truly amazing what kind of technological advances have occurred with security equipment. Long gone are the days where a security camera system required a dedicated operator looking at 20 CRT screens :)
